Over the weekend, we received many questions about Atana's immune profiles and their potential applications for the growing number of people infected with Mpox.
Attana's immune profiles are generic, meaning that the only necessary change between the immune profiles of different pathogens is the antigen of the relevant pathogen (in this case the Mpox virus) that is placed on the sensor surface. Therefore, performing and running an Mpox immune profile scan will be quick.
The Mpox immunity profile can be used to determine protection against Mpox for individuals and populations. Since vaccines currently appear to be a limited resource, the benefit of determining immunity profiles would be to optimize vaccine distribution in affected areas to minimize spread by allocating vaccine to people who need it and not spending it on individuals who are already protected.
In Sweden and other European countries, the closest application is probably to checking people who have already been vaccinated and recommending additional doses. From what we have heard, in Sweden we have vaccinated people over 50 years old in their youth. However, it is not clear how many doses of vaccine are needed to reactivate protection.
Atana has a tool, the Immunity Profile, to determine protection and help prioritize who should be vaccinated. However, it must be an organization that has the resources and all the other skills needed to implement the use of immunity profiles.
The figure shows the immunity profiles of an unexposed or unvaccinated person, an exposed or vaccinated person with limited protection, and an exposed or vaccinated person with good protection.
