Atari Today they announced a new retro console: the Atari 7800+. It's not a tiny console preloaded with games, but a completely new game console designed to play old 2600 and 7800 cartridges. According to the purchase arguments, it's almost 100% compatible with both Atari's own cartridges and third-party cartridges. As if to underscore this, the Atari 7800+ was released with a new upgrade Bentley Beer Crystal Quest On his cassette.
In addition to the console and games, the CX78+ controller is included in the package. This is wireless with two buttons and a nice little joystick. A more classic design, the CX40+, is available for purchase separately on Atari's website, where you can also get more newly produced cartridges for the partly forgotten 8-bit console.
The Atari 7800 was initially released in 1986-1987 worldwide after delays caused by the North American game crash a few years earlier. The machine makes gaming history by being one of the first backwards compatible game consoles, capable of playing Big Brother 2600 cassette tapes with almost flawless quality. The Atari 7800 eventually sold around 3.77 million units, less than half of the Atari 2600's over 8 million sales. In total, just over 100 titles, both official and unlicensed, were released.
The Atari 7800+ will launch on a (possibly) snowy date this winter. You can pre-order it now via Atari's Home.
