Update: Apple has commented on Ars Technica About “jelly scroll” issues, he says that this is normal for LCD screens. This means that the company does not intend to address the problem in the future.
Apple explains that because screens update line by line, there is a certain delay. This effect is definitely more pronounced than we’ve seen on other LCD screens, so it seems like something you’ll have to live with if you want an iPad mini 6.
Original article: Certain iPad mini 2021– Owners have noticed a display issue called “jelly scroll” on the tablet screen when used in portrait mode.
The term “gel scroll” refers to the effect in which lines of text vibrate sideways as you scroll through a web page or document. It’s easiest to understand by looking at the effect yourself, and you’ll find an example in the embedded tweet below.
The tablet went on sale on Friday, September 24, and since then, more and more users have started noticing an issue. Apple has not yet commented on the issue, but TechRadar has requested clarification from the company.
In the tweet below, you can see the issue in slow motion. It’s hard to detect when you’re using the tablet normally, but it’s really visible and becomes more visible once it’s detected.
Here’s a slow motion video of swiping on the iPad Min I’ve slowed you down even more in a step by step step. Notice how the right moves faster than the left. In normal use, you hardly see it, but it becomes noticeable every now and then. In the landscape it completely disappears pic.twitter.com/iq9LGJzsDISeptember 22, 2021
After hearing these reports, we at TechRadar tested ourselves to see if we had the same issue and found it noticeable on certain occasions with the 2021 iPad mini.
It’s not clear if this is a hardware issue, or if it’s an issue that Apple can fix with a software update in the future.
A similar issue also affected some iPad Air 4 devices, according to a technology leak John Prosser. However, this was not an issue we had during our time with this tablet, so not all models may be affected.
What can Apple do?
While we’ve seen a similar issue before, it was a hardware issue so this might not be something that can be easily fixed.
OnePlus 5 encountered a similar problem, and it is believed to be due to the screen incorrectly mounted. This means that it was not a problem that could be fixed by a software upgrade.
We don’t know what Apple will be able to do until we hear something directly from the company – if we ever get an answer. If you bought an iPad mini 2021, there may be a problem that you have to get used to, or you may need to replace the tablet with another option.
