The well-curated app store does not contain roguelikes and only offers things that are actually updated and maintained. Apple noticed the latter this year when it was launched in the spring and said that all apps that have not been updated for a long time will be removed. According to Finbold.com, they have cracked down on the matter and have deleted more than 540 thousand apps.
This means that the number of apps in the App Store is just over 1.6 million, which is the lowest number in a long time. But the apps that are there anyway are up to date.
The downside to removing old apps is that people with older operating systems are now unable to find apps to use. I understand Apple’s thinking about this, but they could have kept the apps with a label or something.
Before the purge, Apple had nearly 2.2 million apps. The last time I had a major purge was a year ago when over 400,000 apps disappeared. The rival Google Play Store has more than 3.5 million apps.
