But on Wednesday, a judge ordered her release – instead she will be placed under house arrest, but she is banned from using social media at all.

Russian-born Sorokin previously used Instagram extensively to build an image of himself as a glamorous German heiress, defrauding banks, hotels and friends out of tens of thousands of dollars.

It also tried to persuade investors to put money into projects to start a social network on false grounds.

Three years ago, Anna Sorokin was sentenced to between four and twelve years in prison for fraud, but was released early last year. Six weeks later, border police arrested her for staying in the country without a valid visa.

Federal authorities argued in court that Sorokin was in danger of recidivism and therefore should not be released. But the judge sided with the defense and Sorokin now has to wait for a decision on whether she should be deported from the US at home instead.
