Abbey Quays Development To Feature Max Whitlock Gym

Weston Homes and the Estates & Agency Group have gained planning consent from Barking & Dagenham council for the 6 acre, £350m Abbey Quays riverside urban village at Barking.

The 1,089 homes across 13 blocks from 7-29 storeys will include 1-3 bedroom apartments and penthouses with 35% affordable including affordable rent, shared ownership or discount market-sale tenures.

As part of the employment space, community space and public realm provided there will be an athletes training centre/gym to be handed over to double Olympic champion Max Whitlock MBE to create a Max Whitlock Gymnastics Health Club, a training centre and gymnasium for young people.

Bob Weston, Chairman & Chief Executive of Weston Homes says: “The regeneration of this important gateway site into a new waterfront urban-village adjacent to Barking Town Centre forms part of the Borough Council’s vision of bringing aspirational waterfront living to Barking. The £350m Abbey Quays is one of the biggest urban renewal projects in East London, delivering striking new buildings, riverside public spaces, inward investment and job creation. The regenerated site will provide much needed affordable local housing for local Londoners, further enhance the local community and compliment the existing centre.”

Large scale residential development schemes are coming thick and fast in Greater London at the moment. This seems to be a particularly imaginative one which addresses the need to create new places to live, not just build houses.
