A mysterious light phenomenon lit up Kiev – believed to be a meteor

At 10pm, an air raid alert was activated in Kiev urging residents to seek shelter. Even the sky lit up before the regional military administration announced that the danger had passed.

Initially, it was reported that a NASA satellite was behind the sudden light phenomenon. Earlier this week, the US space agency announced that its Resi spacecraft will soon enter Earth’s atmosphere. But the Ukrainians’ theory was retracted after NASA said their craft was still in orbit when the sky over Kiev lit up.

Ukrainian Space Agency She couldn’t come up with anything specific about what was seen over Kiev, but announced that it may have had something to do with something entering Earth’s atmosphere.

– We can’t say exactly what it was, but our assumption is that it was a meteorite, Ihor Kornijenko, head of the space agency’s control center, tells AFP.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, told state-run Suspilne that the glow was visible all the way to Belarus and that it was likely caused by a lightning strike, a particularly bright meteor. He also says that the Air Force was activated when the “explosion” occurred, but no attempt was made to shoot down the object when it was understood to be harmless.

Ukrainian authorities are now searching for a possible crash site to examine what remains of the body, according to Ihnat.

– Our specialists will deal with it, but we’re also working with the theory that this object may have completely burned up on its way to Earth, Suspilne told.
