Just a minute before the end of the match came the goal that brought England down – Vasiliy Berezutsky sent a ball past all the players in the penalty area and into the goal.
– We are not satisfied with the end, but we are happy with the way we performed the match. We dominated and had the most chances to score, so there are a lot of positives to take away, England goalkeeper Joe Hart tells SVT Sport.
The match ended 1–1 and England could therefore continue their quest for a first win in the EC Premiere.
– We did everything right, we owned the game from start to finish, says Eric Dier.
A goal from a free kick gave England the lead
It looked like Just Dier would be England's winner with a quarter of an hour to go. A direct free kick from outside the penalty area almost reached the middle of the goal, but Igor Akinvijev did not reach there.
Before that, England created a double chance, as captain Wayne Rooney's header hit the crossbar first, and then Adam Lallana rebounded from the rebound and hit the post.
Lallana had a chance to break the deadlock in the first half. The 28-year-old finished off a brilliant attack with a low shot from close range in the 22nd minute.
The harmless Russia threatened with quick conversions and the team got off to a flying start in the second half when a cross on the ground found Rossi's feet in the penalty area.
