Here are the worst and best cycling municipalities in Sweden

Cykelfrämjandet takes place once a year. investigation Which will find out where it is best to be a cyclist in Sweden. Simply put, the organization measures what municipalities' infrastructure looks like and how they work politically to increase cycling.

In 2023, 92% of municipalities built new bike paths and all of them operated and maintained cycle infrastructure during the summer and winter months in 2023, which was not the case in 2022. Great job, municipalities!

At the top this year is Karlstad, which moved up from fourth place last year. At the bottom, in 51st place among all participants, is Lilla Edet (the locals jokingly call it “Edet”).

With a population of around 14,000, Lilla Edet is not a huge municipality, but it is known for its famous toilet paper, among other things. For internet foxes, this might ring another bell. The town was given its own song by the group Scumfukkaz, which became a viral phenomenon (check the calendar) about eighteen years ago.

Café reached out to Anna Berlin at Lilla Edet municipality, who told us a little about the feelings surrounding its placement on the list.

“Finding last place in the ‘municipal speedometer’ in Cykelfrämjandet is not fun, even if there are not many municipalities participating. However, we have many activities underway that will mean we will get a better result next year. The community council has commissioned the administration to draw up a cycling plan for the municipality. According to the plan, this is due to be completed in 2025.

Anna tells us more about how Lilla Edet is dealing with the issues of cycling at the moment.

“This year we have participated in the “On Your Feet” initiative, an initiative for schools to get to school on their own, i.e. walking or cycling. We have also introduced a bicycle service day at all secondary schools in the municipality, both municipal and private. In 2024, we have built a new pedestrian/cycling path of about 600 metres along Timmervägen in Göta.”

What does it look like now that it's shrinking as winter approaches?

“Now, during the fall and winter, we are building pedestrian and bike paths in the center of Lilla Edit to improve access for cyclists, among other things. This project also includes the construction of bike racks.”

And of course it looks perfect. We look forward to seeing Lilla Edet climb even higher in the rankings next year.
