The galaxy GN-z11 was discovered by the Hubble Telescope in 2016, and at that time it was the oldest galaxy discovered, as it is about 13.4 billion years old.

Since then, the galaxy has become a mystery to scientists. Being so old, it was very bright.

Now a research study may have found an explanation. There is a massive black hole in the galaxy that is about 1.6 million times the size of our sun.

Raises interesting questions

Black holes – as their name suggests – do not emit light, but their size means they can be hot and powerful enough to produce the intense radiation we see.

The black hole is the oldest hole ever discovered, and raises questions about current theories about mysterious black holes.

Roberto Maiolino says current theories about how black holes form cannot explain how the newly discovered hole could have been so large so early in the universe's history.

It eats sun every five years

– It eats the equivalent of a full sun every five years. “It's much higher than we thought was possible for these black holes,” he told NPR.

There is still a lot that is unclear about black holes, but what researchers have seen is that they form when a massive star collapses in on itself, the Swedish Space Agency writes.

Inside a black hole, gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape, making it invisible to the naked eye.

The newly discovered black hole may have been created by large clouds that explode even before they become stars.
