31 New Wallenberg Academy Fellows Tackle Future Research Questions

This year, 31 young researchers have been named Wallenberg Academy Fellows by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The grant means they will receive funding and the opportunity to participate in a unique mentoring program for the next five years.

Will computers in the future be powered by light alone? Can humans heal their hearts like rib-climbing salamanders? How do dwarf galaxies form and evolve and how can we get better at estimating the probability of risks related to catastrophes? These are some of the research questions that Wallenberg Academy members want to pursue this year.

– The breadth of research and the high quality of applications and the fact that applicants come from diverse backgrounds are pleasing. This concerns both young researchers already at Swedish universities and foreign researchers who are recruited here, says Peter Wallenberg Jr., president of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Members of the Royal Academy of Sciences assist the Foundation by reviewing applications and assisting with selection. The Academy also maintains a mentoring program in which selected researchers are allowed to participate.

– It gives us great pleasure to participate in such exciting projects and to identify and contribute highly talented people. The grant was first announced in 2012 after the program was established in collaboration with the Royal Academies and 16 Swedish universities. Depending on the subject area, the grants range from SEK 6.5 to 15.6 million per researcher over five years. After the first deadline, you can apply for five more years of funding. The grant accommodates research in the natural sciences, medicine, technology, and the humanities and social sciences. In this year’s group, 261 young researchers, 46 percent of whom are women, have been named Wallenberg Academy Fellows.
