On Wednesday, Netflix announced that it is providing a wide range of its movies and series in Spatial Audio format.
The technology debuted on Netflix last year with Stranger Things season 4, but now it’s expanding to more than 700 of its latest and most-watched titles, including The Watcher, Wednesday, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. However, it will only be available to Premium subscribers.
This magical audio experience enhances the viewing experience for anyone with a premium subscription and we’re excited to add this capability to the list of other features already supported, such as 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode,” writes Rishu Arora, Director of Product Management at Netflix in one device. blog posts.
Netflix Spatial Audio: Surround sound with normal stereo speakers
Netflix already offers many movies and series in 4K HDR quality and with audio formats like Dolby Surround 5.1 and Dolby Atmos. As you know, these audio formats require compatible audio hardware with multiple speakers to come on their own.
Netflix Spatial Audio should provide a more immersive audio experience, even when using your TV or PC’s built-in speakers or similar headphones and earphones.
The solution used by Netflix is based on Sennheiser’s Ambeo technology, which outputs surround sound from stereo audio tracks. Apple also has a technology they call Spatial Audiobut there they use surround sound (such as Dolby Atmos) to create a “moving soundscape”.
Netflix shows the difference between stereo and “spatial audio” in the video below. Hear for yourself and tell us what you think!
