New year. New rates, new wins.
This week, the DP World Tour resumes the season with the newly established Hero Cup, part of Europe’s preparations for this fall’s Ryder Cup in Abu Dhabi.
Great Britain/Ireland meets the rest of Europe. Each team consists of ten players selected by Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald. Alexander Noren is included in the rest of Europe. Next week, the season begins again “for real” with the Rolex Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
The PGA Tour makes its way into Hawaii and stops there again this week for the Sony Open.
Sweden entered 2023 with one male player in the world’s top 100 players. Alexander Noran reached the top 50 in 2022, making him ready for all the majors this coming year. Noran climbed from 71st to 39th in the world rankings this week.
Inside the best room, inside the top 50, he did it after a second place at Dunhill Links in September/early October. He moved further into the room after finishing 2022 with a fourth-place finish at the Houston Open and a second-place finish at the Tour Finals on the DP World Tour.
The higher you get, the harder it is to push uphill and Noren’s lift is big, but if you’re moving up the rankings in the OWGR among the ten tallest Swedish men, David Lingmerth has taken a huge step in 2022.
At the start of 2021, Lingmerth was not even among the top thousand ranked players in the world. So he has a few top-10 finishes in minor PGA Tour events and is ranked No. 635 in 2022. This week he is ranked 197th on the OWGR.
438 seats in a year. Lingmerth is now ranked higher than Henrik Stenson.
David Lingmerth got a big boost when he won the National Children’s Hospital Championship at the Korn Ferry Tour in August. This earned him a top 25 finish in the KFT finals and a card to the PGA Tour.
It is now joined by Alexander Noren, Vincent Norman and Henrik Norlander.
Here’s how Sweden’s top ten men are ranked on the OWGR today, compared to the last week of 2021:
39. Alexander Noran – from 71 (up to 32).
185. Alexander Bjork – from 133 (down 52).
197. David Lingmerth – from 637 (to 440).
199. Henrik Stenson – from 182 (17 under).
209. Sebastian Soderbergh – from 257 (up to 48).
235. Jens Dantorp – from 454 (up to 219).
247. Joachim Lagergren – from 234 (13 under).
314. Marcus Kienhalt – from 452 (down 138).
326. Vincent Norman – from 515 (to 189).
381. Henrik Norlander – from 161 (down from 220).
Rory McIlroy tops the world rankings ahead of Scotty Scheffler and Cameron Smith.
