Bilateral cooperation
Finland
Sweden and Finland have the same principles of security policy. Both countries wish to deepen the already extensive cooperation in the field of defense. Sweden cooperates with Finland bilaterally and within existing multilateral forums such as Nordefco, the European Union, the United Nations and NATO.
United States of America
Cooperation with the United States of America is based on the Declaration of Intent (Statement of Intent) signed in 2016, which includes the intent to expand cooperation in operability, exercise, training, materiel collaboration, research and development, and international operations.
United kingdom
Cooperation with the United Kingdom aims to maximize the use and development of countries’ defense capabilities. Moreover, the cooperation will contribute to enhancing the possibility of practical cooperation. Cooperation with the United Kingdom takes place primarily within the framework of the British-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).
Denmark
Cooperation with Denmark is based on the bilateral memorandum of understanding for defense cooperation that was signed in January 2016. The memorandum of understanding states that the cooperation aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the two countries.
Norway
Cooperation with Norway takes place mainly within the framework of Nordefco and trilateral cooperation between Sweden, Norway and Finland.
France
The Swedish Armed Forces’ cooperation with France is primarily through the Swedish participation in Operation Barkhan, the Takoba Task Force in Mali.
Holland
The Netherlands contributes a staff officer to the Nordic Gender in Military Operations Center (NCGM) and participates in the center’s steering group.
Poland
The Armed Forces are constantly working to maintain and develop the level of bilateral defense cooperation with Poland.
Germany

multilateral cooperation
NATO
Sweden’s cooperation with NATO is central to its national defense capability and the ability to conduct operations with others in the vicinity or beyond. All of these parts contribute to developing national capabilities and building a stronger defense. Within NATO, Sweden has Enhanced Opportunity Partner (EOP) status, which is offered to selected partner countries on a three-year basis.
European Union
The Armed Forces continue to participate in the European Union’s crisis management and training efforts, which contribute to peace and security in the countries and regions concerned and to raising the overall European military capacity.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
Cooperation with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania focuses on the exchange of experiences as well as training and practical cooperation. Cooperation contributed to maintaining military strategic operability with the Baltic states and had a positive impact on the operational capability of the Armed Forces.
United Nations
Cooperation with the United Nations aims to deepen and expand knowledge of the United Nations system and contribute expertise and experience to developing the capacity of the United Nations to manage crises. Sweden’s participation in the armed forces in long-term UN operations.
Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF)
This collaboration is led by the United Kingdom and aims to develop capacity to implement joint operations and operations. The cooperation also includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and, since 2021, Iceland as well.
Framework Nations Concept (FNC)
Germany leads the cooperation within the Federal National Council, and it includes a number of different projects in different areas such as health care, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear, civil-military cooperation, logistics etc.
Scandinavian Defense Cooperation – Nordivko
